Legislative Action Is Critical

One of the most important and primary functions of ABATE is to serve as a legislative watchdog.  It is vital that we remain ever vigilant if we intend to safeguard our liberty and freedom. Here you will find useful information and links related to ABATE of Illinois’ legislative agenda, current state and federal legislation being monitored, and other information on issues that may have a regulatory impact on motorcycling.

You will also be able to find links here to help you contact your political representatives and participate in the legislative process by filling out witness slips.

It's The Law

A few select recent laws passed that impact motorcycling.

Route 66 Motorcycle License Plate

Passed 8/22/2016 – Effective 1/1/2017
Allows for the use of special Illinois Route 66 license plates on motorcycles.

Passed 7/22/2016 – Effective 1/1/2017
Allows for the use of blue dot tail lights on the rear of motorcycles up to one inch in diameter.

Passed 8/19/2015 – Effective 8/19/2015 Mandates that all Illinois counties must issue permits for poker run charitable events. Additionally limits permit fees to no more than $25 per permit.

Passed 8/3/2015 – Effective 8/3/2015
Permits the use of accent lighting on motorcycles as long as the lighting is not red, blue, blinking, falshing, oscillating or rotating.

Passed 11/30/2011 – Effective 01/01/2012
Allows for motorcycles to proceed through intersection with caution if a traffic light fails to turn green.

Note: In 2015 language was added to the Federal Highway Bill that excluded money from funding motorcycle only checkpoints. However, this was temporary. Federal bills were introduced in both the House and the Senate that would have made motorcycle only checkpoints illegal under Federal Law. Unfortunately both of those bills stalled in committee and more work is needed on this issue.
